Evaluation of Effective Communication Skills of University Students in the Field of Health: Example of Kocaeli

INTRODUCTION: In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the effective communication skills of university students who receive education in the field of health.
METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted with 465 students who receive health education at three schools of Kocaeli between March and June 2018. The data were collected with the student information form and the Effective Communication Skills Scale (ECSS). Comparisons between groups were made with Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests. Spearman correlation analysis was used for the relationships between the variables.
RESULTS: The mean age of the students participating in the study was 20.5±1.9, and 79.8% of them were women. 29% of the students were in the nursing department, 30.5% were third class students. The students stated that they had problems in communicating with the lecturers mostly, while the patient or the patient’s companion the least. It was determined that the students scored above the average in the ECSS sub-dimensions, and their communication skills differed according to gender, number of siblings, what number child, income level and the department of education (p<0.05). The ECSS scores of the students did not differ according to the class of education (p>0.05).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In the research; it was concluded that the students had good-level effective communication skills and that these skills did not change during their education. Studies should be conducted on the reasons why the occupational education curriculum cannot develop students’ effective communication skills.

Sağlık Alanında Öğrenim Gören Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Etkili İletişim Becerilerinin Değerlendirilmesi: Kocaeli Örneği

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Bu araştırmada, sağlık alanında öğrenim gören üniversite öğrencilerinin etkili iletişim becerilerinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlandı.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Tanımlayıcı tipteki bu araştırma, Mart ile Haziran 2018 tarihleri arasında Kocaeli'de bir üniversite bünyesindeki üç sağlık okulunda öğrenim gören 465 öğrenci ile yürütüldü. Araştırma verileri öğrenci bilgi formu ve Etkili İletişim Becerileri Ölçeği (EİBÖ) ile toplandı. Gruplar arası karşılaştırmalar Mann-Whitney U ve Kruskal Wallis testleri ile yapıldı. Değişkenler arasındaki ilişkiler için Spearman korelasyon analizi kullanıldı.
BULGULAR: Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 20,5±1,9 olup, %79,8’i kadındı. %29’u hemşirelik bölümünde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin, %30,5’i üçüncü sınıf öğrencisiydi. Öğrenciler en fazla öğretim elemanlarıyla, en az hasta veya hasta refakatçisi ile iletişim kurmada sorun yaşadıklarını ifade etti. Öğrencilerin EİBÖ alt boyutlarından ortalamanın üzerinde puan aldıkları, iletişim becerilerinin cinsiyet, kardeş sayısı, kaçıncı çocuk olduğu, gelir düzeyi ve öğrenim gördükleri bölüme göre farklılık gösterdiği belirlendi (p<0,05). Öğrenim görülen sınıfa göre öğrencilerin EİBÖ puanları farklılık göstermedi (p>0,05).
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Araştırmada; öğrencilerin etkili iletişim becerilerinin iyi düzeyde olduğu, bu becerilerin öğrenimleri sırasında değişmediği sonucuna ulaşıldı. Mesleki eğitim müfredatının öğrencilerin etkili iletişim becerilerini geliştirememesinin nedenleri konusunda çalışmalar yapılmalıdır.
