Evaluation of relationship between mean platelet volume and red cell distribution width levels in cases with acute pancreatitis and its severity

INTRODUCTION: Acute pancreatitis is one of the major inflammatory clinical tables among gastrointestinal system diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the mean platelet volume (MPV), red cell distribution width (RDW) and other inflammatory markers with acute pancreatitis and its severity.
METHODS: A total of 94 acute pancreatitis patients (male/female: 55/39), and 70 healthy subjects (male/female: 42/28) were enrolled in this study. MPV, RDW and other inflammatory parameters were measured for all participants. Ranson Score was used as to predict the disease severity in cases with acute pancreatitis.
RESULTS: A statistically significant decrease in MPV levels was observed in acute pancreatitis cases compared with healthy controls (7.9±1.1 fL and 8.4±0.9 fL; p=0.003). RDW levels were significantly increased compared to healthy controls (12.8%±1.5 and 11.7%±0.7; p<0.01). MPV levels were more significantly decreases patients with Ranson score ≥3, compared with Ranson score <3 (p<0.001).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Although there is no unique, favorable method to assess acute pancreatitis and its severity, MPV level at hospital admission may be used as an easy and cheap marker in earlier prediction of acute pancreatitis and its seriousness.

Akut Pankreatitli Olgularda Ortalama Trombosit Hacmi ve Eritrosit Dağılım Genişliği Düzeyleri ve Hastalık Şiddetiyle Olan İlişkilerinin Belirlenmesi

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Akut pankreatit gastrointestinal sistemin önde gelen bir inflamatuar klinik tablosudur. Bu çalışmanın amacı, akut pankreatit ve hastalık şiddeti ile ortalama trombosit hacmi (OTH), eritrosit dağılım genişliği (EDG) ve diğer inflamatuar belirteçler arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemekti.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: 94 akut pankreatitli hasta (erkek/bayan: 55/39) ve 70 sağlıklı kontrol (erkek/bayan: 42/28) çalışmaya dahil edildi. OTH, EDG ve diğer inflamatuar belirteçler tüm çalışmaya katılanlarda ölçüldü. Akut pankreatitli olgularda hastalık ciddiyetini belirlemek için Ranson skoru kullanıldı.
BULGULAR: Akut pankreatitli olgularda, sağlıklı kontrollere gore OTH seviyeleri istatistiki olarak anlamlı düzeyde baskılanmıştı (7,9±1,1 fL ile 8,4±0,9 fL; p=0,003), EDG seviyeleri ise sağlıklı kontrollere göre anlamlı düzeyde yükselmişti (%12,8±1,5 ile %11,7±0,7; p<0,01). Ranson skoru ≥3 olanlarda, olmayanlara gore OTH hacmi değerleri daha belirgin baskılanmıştı (p<0,001).
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Akut pankreatit ve onun şiddetinin belirlemede tek ve ideal bir metod olmamasına rağmen, OTH hastaneye başvuru esnasında akut pankreatit ve onun ciddiyetinin belirlemede ucuz ve kolay elde edilebilir bir marker olarak kullanılabilir.
