OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of Frey’s syndrome in patients
who underwent parotidectomy. The results were discussed and the literature was reviewed.
METHODS: From 2005 to 2008, 46 patients underwent superficial or total parotidectomy for parotid
mass in the Ear Nose Throat Clinic. All patients were given a questionnaire to evaluate clinical signs of Frey's syndrome during post-operative follow-up period ( 3-18 months). Then all patients were classified as positive or negative using Minor starch-iodine test.
RESULTS: 46 patients including 16 males and 30 females underwent parotidectomy for parotid mass.
The mean age of the patients was 50,8 years. Of these 46 patients, 4 (8,69%) were considered to be symptomatic according to the Minor test. Additional 2 asymptomatic patients were also evaluated as test-positive.
CONCLUSION: Clinical evaluation of patients and Minor test are main methods to diagnose the Frey’s
syndrome. The incidence of Frey's syndrome in the literature has been variously described. In our study, rate of symptomatic cases was found to be 8,69%.
